La formazione intellettuale della giovane Victoria Ocampo, le esperienze correlate alla gestazione di Sur, la mitica rivista che fondò nel 1931 e che diresse per circa quaranta anni, sono solo alcuni dei motivi di interesse di questo testo, avvincente come un romanzo di formazione, documentato e problematico come un romanzo saggio o romanzo di idee. Intellettuali europei e americani di primo piano, personaggi fittizi che fungono da detonatori di contraddizioni e perplessità, mettono in scena una commedia umana in cui i percorsi individuali si intrecciano con i percorsi identitari di una nazione alla ricerca di se stessa, al di là del mito stratificatosi intorno alla sua capitale: Buenos Aires, città-nazione fondata e rifondata all’insegna del modello europeo.

“La palabra “Finisterre” juega con dos significados: el nombre geográfico de la localidad de Finisterre en Galicia, desde donde habla la voz de la protagonista, y la idea simbólica derivada del nombre: “Finis Terrae”, en latín, “Fisterra”, en gallego, “Finisterre”, en castellano, o el “Fin del Mundo”. En Tailandia, lógicamente, se desconocen ambas referencias. Para mantener esta doble intención de la escritora, ponemos el título en tailandés como สุดขอบโลกที่ฟินิสแตร์เร, que significa “Fin del Mundo en Finisterre”.

«El segundo caso trata de la referencia geográfica de la escena central de la obra: el desierto argentino, la extensa pampa que, desde el punto de la vista del gobierno nacional, era donde habitaba la “barbarie” que había que erradicar. A partir de esta palabra, o “wilderness” en inglés, se inventa un nuevo término tailandés que abarca todo el juego de significados: ทุ่งเถื่อน.”

“La “lejanía” geográfica que separa Argentina y Tailandia parece un obstáculo para cualquier toma de contacto con los fenómenos culturales que se dan al otro lado del planeta. Sin embargo, el relevante tratamiento de la figura femenina que reivindica el espacio de la novela histórica Finisterre de María Rosa Lojo, además de revisar la  cuestión de civilización y barbarie desde otra perspectiva, permite descubrir la universalidad de los temas tratados. Son las “coincidencias” histórico-culturales en relación con las mujeres en la “periferia” las que logran borrar la frontera entre Argentina y Tailandia, el otro extremo del mundo.”
